HSBC retail service is really bad. I have always banked with BoA, but recently moved so I was thinking trying HSBC since it is only two blocks away from me. And I am in shock how bad the service is.
1. The people work in the branch are snobish, they are not friendly or trying to help out. I open a direct deposit account with them and it took me more than 7 days to get my card, and I deposit my salary check, it took more than 4 business days for the check to clear, and there were a weekend in between so it totally took me 7 days to get my salary! I asked them to advance money for me and they turned me down, saying the account was newly opened.
2. The phone service is very bad, not only they transfer me to india during eastern day time (can't they afford someone who can speak english?), but also they keep you wait on the phone for half an hour just to talk. And they ask you to verify not only your personal information, they also expect you to remember when exactly and where (the exact address) when you open the account otherwise they can not talk to you at all!!! And they create this stupid phone access code which i never heard of, and I didn't even get to choose the code. So I was not able to use the phone service until they MAIL me the access code. I have to go to work during the day time, so when i can not deal with my transactions, i have to skip work during the day to go to their branch (because I can't use the phone service either).
OVERALL, they are not convenient, not speedy in processing the transactions and they are very very slow in doing almost everything, not only the phone but also in transactions. I can't imagine opening my small business checking account or take out a loan with them.
I like BoA, and i had been banking with them in the past 4 years, comparing with the service with BoA, HSBC is terrible to the degree that I feel like i have never used retail banking before, since when it has so many rules??!!!
Anyways, if you want to choose retail banks in NYC, choose BoA or Citi, they both have lots of ATM and branches, and most of all, THEY ARE FAST!
