I was surfing the internet because I wanted to know if I had rights because I feel I am being harrassed from a student loan company. When I came upon your website and saw the many letters complaining about SLM it brought tears to my eyes. I thought I was the only one going through issues with SLM.
SLM interest rates are very, very high. I went from $10.00 a month during my online course with National to $187.03 after the course was finished in the fall of and before I knew it I was paying $247.08, which is what I am paying as of today.
I recieved my July 11 bill stating that the amount due is $641.24. My past due amount is $394.16 and my monthly payment is $247.08.
They stated on my billed that they already reported me to the credit bureau.
I had financial struggles in May and June so I couldn't give them my monthly payment. I was able to give them $30.00 in May and $100.00 in June. I paid them the $247.08 for July.
Everyday including Saturday's and Sunday's I get phone calls from them. They disburbed my family and then they called my co-applicants and lie to them stating that I haven't paid them in May and June. They call Sunday's in the morning till the evening time. They call Saturday's starting at 8am till the evening.
All day everyday. It is to the point that I want to change my phone number. At this point I do not know what to do. I'm tired of them harrassing me, my family and my co-applicants for more money I do not have.
I am a single-parent on a budget. I lost my job September and I working contract work which isn't much. I can't give them anymore money only what I can afford, and I barely can afford the $247.08 monthly bill.
By reading the many complaints about SLM, I can only hope and pray that no one else gets harrassed and or ripoff by SLM.
I have children that will be going to college in the future and I will make sure they or anyone else do not put in an loan application wth SLM.
