Probelm closing my account with Capital One

I opened an account with Capital One about 10 months ago. After about two months, I was contacted by them regarding what appeared to fraudulent charges on my account. They were in fact fraudulent. I had to contest the charges and submit a dispute. It took two submittals and two affidavits over a period of 3 months to finally get the fraudulent charge off my account.

During this time, I had to call Capital One six seperate times - each time, I was disconnected more than once when one department who couldn't help me, transferred me to another department which couldn't help me. Due to this experience, I had enough - that was it, I was going to pay off and close the account. I paid the balance in full - the account had a 0$ balance.

I called their account service team and told them I wanted to close the account. They agreed to do this but asked why I was closing the account. I told them the problem I had experienced and explained that I wanted better customer service and consumer protection for my account. The customer service rep began to argue with me telling me that I had not really experienced what I described - What??? - I think I know what I just experienced, but that didn't stop them - when I said that was all well and fine, but I still intended to close my account regardless of what she though I had experienced, she became even more arrogant and beligerent, shouting at me over the phone - this was a "Customer Service" representative???

I ended up closing the account - or so I was told. Days later I even received written correspondance confirming my request, but weeks later I learned my account was still open - in fact, my account remained open nearly 3 months after the initial request and written confirmation. After additional phone calls and sending them emails threatening legal action, they finally closed my account. I can't believe the nasty, arrogant and confrontational attitude of their customer service representatives.

It was one thing to deal with their incompetence, but to have to be treated disrepectfully was beyond what any person should have to endure from ANY company. I followed all of their requests andprocedures, and in the end, was able to colse my account, but I have never experienced such terrible customer service and incompetence from a finanical corporation before. There are many good credit card companys out there who appreciate customers in good standing who pay thier bills and have very good credit ratings - there is no need to deal with companies who are incompetent, unreliable, and lie to their customers the way Capital One did. I will never deal with them again, and each time I see one of their 'cute' commercials, it makes my stomach turn.
