NSF fees: When did having money in your account generate this fee?

After 12 years with this bank (after various bank buyouts) I am totally disgusted by the way they are stealing my money. They offer "free" checking as long as you have Direct Deposit. So I have that with both of my checking accounts. That means they are providing accounts and not generating any income. So what do they do?

Starting back in March as an "associate" told me via phone. (That's when this new way of balancing the account came into effect) Transactions lessen your balance on the day that the debit card is used. Okay. I know my balance and watch all my transactions daily through online banking. However, the "bank" changes when the transaction "clears" versus when it is "pending". They say a pending transaction is not final and when another transaction clears that will affect the balance differently.

So if you purchase someting today (and the amount is shown both online and via automated service as being "temp" deducted from your balance) and it does not finally clear until two days later and you purchase something else in the interim based on the balance generated via online banking or automated service they will generate an nsf fee (even if there is funds in the account) to make money. Confusing isn't it.

Will I am not going to be confused any longer. I am taking my accounts to bank that will not do "funny" math to suppliment their income because of their mortgage loses.
