Continuously held my money when deposited resulting in uncalled for overdraft charges

While banking with US Bank, my deposits were continuously held for days until i was charged with overdraft charges and late fees... I had since quit banking with them but my girlfriend had an account with them with which she put my name on as an authorized user. This was only so that I could deposit money into the account on her behalf as we were informed by our banking agent.

My ex wifes account was supposed to be closed by her which it never was and they continuosly charged the account an overdraft charge for over a year unbeknownst to me until i my girlfriend's account was emptied of almost a thousand dollars on Dec 24th leaving the account well in the hole and no one to contact for several days because of the holiday. When I did finally get a rep on the phone she informed me that because my name was on the account and that they couldn't track down my ex I would get the punishment for her actions including my GF's account because my name was on it...

When i questioned the ethics of this practice she kind of chuckled and said we're the bank, we can do that and you can't do anything about it (true statement). When my gf and I went to close the account we over heard two other customers in the very next windows complaining of the exact same thing happening to them. Then I saw a documentary on PBS about banks and credit card companies scamming the American public in a very closely related situation and the US GOVT doing nothing about it... When will this madness end and when will the American Consumer be protected from these predators?
