I received a call today requesting that I contact a neighbor for UCB. I wondered what the acronym stood for and was told "United Credit Bureau". The man's name was "John". He stated the neighbor had applied for a loan 7 months ago and it was just approved. "John" left a phone, extension, and case number. I immediately called the phone number back and a different man who answered, after I had to ask twice, said UCB stood for "United Collections Bureau" and that they were a legitimate collection agency. I looked the name up on the web. I called the number a third time, this time getting a woman who refused to tell me what UCB stood for when pressed and wanted to direct me to the extension number. I requested not to be called again. She took the case number and my phone number and promised I would not be contacted. I suggested the company was a scam which she indignantly refuted, telling me I haven't done my homework. While I inquired as to why a neighbor would be contacted for collection if that was so, (my neighbors have an answering machine, afterall), she hung up. It will be interesting to see if UCB calls back.
