I returned to Australia in December (about 12 months ago, in fact), after living in the US for approximately three years. This week, I recieved a letter (forwarded from the US) from Superior Asset Management, making a debt recovery claim for US$387.72.
In the claim letter, Superior Asset Management Inc state that they are "a collection agency for Bank Of America", and that a Bank Of America account (account number quoted) to the above amount has been placed with them for collection. The account, and the claim, are both bogus.
I was somewhat confused when I recieved the claim letter, until I researched the company and discovered that they appear to have quite a well-documented reputation for putting out 'speculative' claims for debt recovery. I assume that they make a decent income on the premise that, for every 100 they distrubute, at least one recipient will be gullible enough to pay the claim without questioning the debt. What a world we live in!
