Upon opening a free checking account with Fifth Third out of local convienence, I have been nothing but frustrated and disappointed with this bank. Originally they accidentally charged my account overdraft fees by bank error which as a result caused overdrafting of my account, to which they charged me overdraft fees. They eventually fixed this. Recently, a merchant overcharged my account when using my Mastercard Debit card. I disputed this with Fifth Third. They do not do disputes over the phone, so a letter must be submitted. As a result of the overcharge, my account was overdrafted by $1.63. Fifth Third then charged me $66 in overdraft fees. When I called to point out that this overdraft was a result of a disputed overcharge, I was told by their floor supervisor, Chris Weimer, that as long as I authorized any charge from the merchant that Fifth Third was not going to refund the overdraft fees. He stated this was based on Fifth Third Guidelines. When I asked him for a copy of said guidelines, he said they were confidential. He said because my account had been credit for overdraft fees (resulting from a bank error) that the company was not going to refund said fees. I pointed out that the fees were complete bank errors that were reversed, but he said there was no way of knowing that, and again, against "guidelines." I'm still working on this, but this people at this bank are more than happy to say no to just about anything. They will not work with you. It completely disgusts me and I think that it may be illegal to cause a person to be charged to for reported damages for disputed charges.
