Took money from me that was not theirs

I owed Aspire Credit Card $1100. I called to pay them off and was sent to CompuCredit. CompuCredit told me that this was the last day to pay them off before my account would be assigned to an outdside collection agency. They offered me a settlement payment of $712.00. I paid it right then by credit card.

One month later I recieved a bill from a collection company that I owed $400 some dollars for a remaining balance with CompuCredit. So I called CompuCredit and they said that the account was not theirs. I asked..."If it was not your account to take my money then why did you accept the payment?" They told me that the payment was not made in time so they had to send it out.

Am I the only one confused? Even if I did not make the payment on time but I paid $712.00 out of $1100 then how could they transfer my account to collections? And why did they take my money after offering me a settlement payment and then send me to collections? I am extremely upset that I am still recieving bills from now an attorney. I am not paying this remaining amount. When i call CompuCredit they simply tell me that it is not their accont anymore and they can not help me. I have asked them to fax me the copy of the payment made to them and they refuse. They should not have taken my payment if they were just going to send it to a collection agency. I cleaned up my credit and now this company has screwed me and done absolutely nothing to help me resolve this.
