Annual Service Charge ripoff

The following is a letter I sent to FIRST USA after I made a phone call to cancel my account! This was on September 7th. To date, I have not received a phone call or email in return!

I called a few moments ago to close my account as I have just received a credit card statement showing an annual fee. While on the phone with Julie (Employee #SI9) she stated that she could not close the account because the statement was past 30 days. I told her that I had just received the statement showing the charge. I never use the account and did not receive a copy of an earlier statement. She stated that it went to the same address. I told her that I honestly had not received a copy of the earlier statement.By the way, I find this method of handling an account very offensive. I am sure that Julie was able to look at my account and see that I never use it. She could easily understand that in good faith, I made a phone call to close the account.

Instead, I was encouraged by Julie to upgrade the account to one without an annual fee and a credit limit of $X, XXX. I did not want the account, but Julie stated that it was the only way that she could reverse the fee. Although I was confused at this method of solving my problem, I agreed thinking that she could make this change and then I would be able to close the account. She said it would be a few minutes and asked to put me on hold.

A few moments later, she came back to say that she could not change the account due to something on my credit report. Now both confused and angry, I asked to speak with a manager. Julie put me on hold again. She came back to tell me that I could not speak to a manager as none was available. This does not seem reasonable. She took my phone number and stated that someone would call me back in the next few days. She stated that I could write a letter asking that the charge be removed. I asked her if email was available. She stated that it was not, but I could fax. Again, this does not seem reasonable because you ask me for my email on my credit card statement. I asked for her name. She told me that her name was Julie, but refused to give her last name.instead she gave me the employee number listed above.

I do not understand why I was treated in this manner. Further, I do not understand how anything on my credit report could reflect a problem with having a $X, XXX credit line. Our household income is well over XXXXXXXX per year. We have no credit card debt.in the past, I have held very high credit card limits, used them, and always paid them off.in the past year, I have received a very high line of credit from Bank of America. I am certain their credit requirements are more stringent than a credit card company. It doesn't make sense.

Furthermore, more to the point, I was not interested in an account because I do not need or use it. Although it seems I will now have to follow up on a credit report problem, today I merely wanted to close this account and reverse the annual fee. Can you do this? If I am a credit risk as Julie stated, I would think that this would be to the benefit of your company.
