We received a bill addressed to my wife's maiden name from Merchants Credit Guide for $43.51 claiming a defaulted account w / ATT Corp.
I called the "888-249-1037" 3x before speaking to Mrs. Bufkin. She indicated that this was a "long overdue matter and needed to be settled with urgency". I repeatedly questioned her about what the charge was from and all she could tell me was that they purchased the debt from "NCO Corp".
She became agitated when I refused to pay by phone and continued to press on the fact that this matter should be resolved immediately to avoid negative credit impact. It should be noted that I have never seen this on either of our credit reports. What is concerning however is that Mrs. Bufkin had my wife's personal information.
Also, when I indicated that I would pay the settlement amount of $32.63, she indicated that it would look better if I paid the full amount and that the negative impact to the credit report would be substantial and that I should pay the "extra $10".
I then googled the company and found the many similar stories from this company and "Ken Hughes". I will proceed with letters to the respective AG's for MA and IL and see where this goes.
Sincerely
