Merrick Bank, disquising themselves as a legitmate opportunity to re-establish credit offered me an opportunity to apply for a Visa card. The card was a secured card. The agreement was that I would send them an initial fee for the cards, secured by a savings. Reading the conditions, it sounded reasonable. After sending Merrick the initial fee, and not recieving the card, I called them. They responded by telling me that I owe them $500.00 and that they would send me a card when I send them the money. This was not in the agreement. I asked for a refund, they refused, and threatened me with more bad credit, collection and suit. I stuck to my guns and did not send the money. They initiated collections, and some 7 years later, I recieved a letter stating that I owe $438.71 and that this would negatively effect my credit. I did more research and found that the payoff had been made and that this is not a credible debt. I called back to find out who was responsible and talked with an agressive customer service person who wanted my to give them critical information, social securtiy number, address and phone number, other accounts that I may have, and verifications. I refused and hung up. Beware of this scam. I am sure that had I not done the research, I would be more of a victim, paying for services that I never recieved in addition to not recieving a refund of the money that I already sent them.
