I received a letter in the mail from Merchant's Credit Guide Co.'s Ken Hughes stating that I owed $1,134.49 to SEARS, "the original creditor". Well, this caught my eye, since I have NEVER had an account with them! Then, I tried to call the 888 number on the letter... And to my surprise, "my call could not be completed as dialed". Hmmm, so I got on-line.
Now that I have discovered that I am not the only one these people are trying to rip off, I intend to pursue this to the ninth degree! It is wrong that anyone should be afraid that they are going to be swindled by a collection agency's ability to bend the law to EXTORT money for innocent people - the entire collection letter is a scare tactic! They make you feel as if you should choose one of their 3 payment options to resolve the debt. Where does all that money they get go? DONT PAY OR CALL.
Read the "fine" print! You have to 'write them within 30 days to dispute, then they will send you verification'. Whatever! Good thing I didn't call. I will fax them a letter in writing, as well as the local media to ask for a full investigation.
