Portfolio Recovery Associates
Ripoff dishonest fraudulent billing

I received a call from this "company" for several days. They claimed I owed debt and demanded pay. The first call, I was told I owed one amount; the fourth call, I was told I owed a greater amount. They wanted to know the last 4 digits of my SS# and current address, threatening to call me everyday until I verified my ID. The caller even "bargained" and told me to give him any two numbers and claimed to give me the last digits of his SS# to show it was no big deal.

They claimed to have a copy of my credit report (which I checked and was fine). The info they gave about me was incorrect, but they still called, demanding my ID. (Ask them to spell the name they have on you and provide a middle initial. I discovered that was incorrect too.) I told them that I wouldn't give personal information to someone I didn't know. Their claim to credibility was to look on the website www.portfoliorecovery.com (know that a website doesn't mean these people are who they say they are!)

My bank told me that a legitimate company would give me the type of account, the company name, the address and number, and that if there was a debt to settle, it could be done with that company, not portfolio recovery. When I asked for info about the company they claimed I owed debt to, I was only given the name and told they didn't keep the address or contact number, that they'd have to have warehouses to store all that information. When I pressed the issue, they claimed to Google the company info on the internet. Finally, I told them they needed to fax this fallacious claim to me. I gave them the fax number to my local police station, which an officer there told me to do; they never did fax their claim.

By their rude, unprofessional demeanor, the incorrect and inconsistent information, and their persistence to get my personal information, I believe this is a scam and should be stopped. My advice would be to not give them any personal information and to ask them the questions I addressed above. Call your local police station and file a report, and see if you can use their fax number to give to this "company" to send a claim. Further, file a complaint on the www.ftc. Gov site. That website will also show how you can get a free copy of your credit report. Finally, if they're still persistent, you can have the phone company put a tracer on your phone, or get a new unlisted number. It's possible too that these are scam artists using Portfolio Recovery's name, but regardless, you ask the questions, you do the research, you take control of the situation.
