I went online to get a credit report for my partner, and ended up signing up for a monthly report without fully understanding what I was doing. Once I realized that I would be charged for something I didn't actually want, I immediately called to cancel the membership. The man I spoke with was very obnoxious and tried adamantly to talk me out of cancelling, but in the end assured me that my account had been cancelled. Eight months later I looked at my old credit card statements and saw that I had been charged every month for this membership that I had cancelled.
I immediately called and spoke with a woman who verified that there was a record of my phone call eight months ago, and she assured me that the charge would be removed and my account would be credited in 7-10 days.
I guess the most important part is that I made her tell me her name and corporate ID number, and told her I would be watching my account for the next 7-10 days to make sure that actually happens.
How illegal is that for a company to continue charging someone after they've called and been assured that their account was cancelled?!?!?!?
