One day in March of this year, I received a call from Genesee Valley Associates. I have a hearing loss. The person was talking so fast that I had to tell them to slow down. When they wouldn't slow down, I hung up out of frustration. They called back a few minutes later. Told me I owed $12000 on some account but wouldn't tell me what account it was. I said I didn't owe any money on any account and that I was on unemployment. They asked if they could speak to my husband. I said "What husband? I haven't been married in 17 years." They said the name of my ex husband. I said it was probably his account with my name on it. The next time they called, when I answered the phone, they hung up on me. They called my parents and told them I was going to be sued for $4500. That is when I hit the roof, because I knew that they had violated the law. I called them and did not admit owing any money to them. They said I did and that I had to pay or they would sue me. I asked for a statement in writing with proof that the account was mine. What I got was a peice of paper on their stationary showing who the account was with, the account number, the reference number, the present balance and what they would settle for. I found an attorney who would deal with them on the FDCPA end of things and faxed him a copy of the letter. I then faxed a letter to GVA telling them I am disputing the account and wanted proof that I am the one who actually opened the account-i.E. A copy of the signed statement with my signature on it that shows I am the one who signed the papers for the account. That was over a month ago, and I haven't heard from them. They have to contact my attorney now anyway. These guys are bottom feeder, third party debt collectors who should be put out of business. These guys wouldn't make any money unless the original creditors wrote them off. Let's put these dorks out of business.
