Fraudulent Billing, account was closed, ruining credit

Here we go, capitalism at its worst.

Fron the best that I can tell First Consumer National Bank went out of business in and has sold off it's debt to other creditors. I have been told by "family in the business" that this debt is sometimes sold for $. 06-$. 10 on the dollar. Then what happens is that these debt collection agencies use threats and questionable tactics to collect for profit. Knowing this faxt, this debt is negotiable!

FCNB is claiming that we owe them $900, although my wife closed this account in requesting that this be done twice. However, the account seems to have remained open, and after 6 years of compounded $80/year card fees at 22% interest, we sit with a large debt that we should not owe. Even worse, they have reposted this on her credit report that has dropped it 100pts in the last few months.

The challenge for us is that since she assumed the matter closed in we have no supporting documents to back our claims. I can not get in contact with anyone with this creditor to get their supporting documents on this debt.

We are currently in the process of officially answering their claim in writing. After that the law firm/collection agency should provide us with documents supporting this claim? Anyone have experience with this part?
