Academy Collections
Ripoff highly unprofessional, questionable sketchy, annoying

This company is the most questionable one I have ever run across. According to the Better Business Bureau, they have business since the 1970s yet have never registered with the BBB. Hmmm... Wonder why.

We received a call last night from an Academy collector that was outrageous. My husband received a collections letter from Academy about 6 weeks ago and has been trying to get in touch with them to clear up this minor problem (he has excellent credit.) The first woman he spoke with was helpful, but asked for his bank account info, which he provided her just to clear up this matter. I find this to be fairly odd, but since this is our first time dealing with an agency, we just assumed this was normal. Please let me know if it is not.

Last night, when a different collector called, she informed him that the first woman he talked to "no longer works there." This made my blood run cold that he had given her his account info to someone who has "disappeared." The call began fine, as my courteous and super-polite husband was trying to explain what payment method he would like to do. He said the collector randomly flipped out on him, began screaming, interrupting and threatening him. He could not get a word in without her using abusive language and threatening to sue him. He works in customer service and told her she was doing a poor job in this area - she informed him that she was NOT a customer service rep, but was actually a paralegal. Right...

He repeatedly asked for her supervisor and she refused. He asked for a fax number and she would not give it to him. He asked if she was a legitimite company and she declined to answer. He asked if they were registered with the BBB - she refused to answer.

This was at 8:00 last night right before dinner and lasted a good 35 minutes.By the time he was off the phone, I had printed out info from the BBB website about these people and he was preparing a file to take to the bank about the call.
