On January 31st, a payroll check in my name was cashed at a bank rhode island using my social security number. The bank said whoever cashed used an ID (which normally is seven digits long), however the id number written on the check was my social security number (which is nine). They never gave the security tape to the police, but managed to change their policy that two forms or id is needed if you don't have an account with the bank. About a year later, "Bank Rhode Island announced the theft of a laptop computer that held personal information for as many as 43,000 BankRI customers, more than half the bank's customer base. The theft of the laptop containing the missing information —reportedly including customer names, home addresses, and Social Security numbers — was first revealed by Fiserv, Inc., the principal data service provider for BankRI." this back needs to be shut down.
