I was interested in pursuing a refinance of my current mortgage with Chase Manhattan and inquired at Ameriquest, having heard no negative reports about them. I initially talked to someone on the phone and told them specifically that I was just thinking about this at the present and just wanted information on closing costs, etc. They hounded me with phone calls from the rep to finally her boss, wanting me to commit. I told them I was not prepared to do that.
A few days later, I received a large envelope with documents to sign to get the mortgage"going". I tore them up, because by then I had been alerted to look at this site and determined that Ameriquest was not for me.
When I got my next mortgage statement, I found a charge of $20.00 for faxing a payoff amount to Ameriquest. I called Chase to tell them I had requested no such thing and they said I had to talk to Ameriquest, which I tried to do. Of course, no one was available, but I left a message that I did not request any paperwork or any action on a refinance and I expected them to repay the $20.00, requested illegitimately. I left my name and number and it has now been a month and I have heard nothing nor received the reimbursement, so I am out $20.00 simply for an inquiry.
If this is not illegal, it should be. Please be careful giving this company ANY information!
