I got Capital One as my first line of credit when I was 18. Having established credit with one company is good on your credit report. At exactly 5 years, they started to charge a "monthly maint fee" after having a free account for 5 years. I called and asked why are they charging, they said it was a "strategic business decision" and refused to waive it. So I prompty closed my account with those @$holes.
It should be illegal to charge to keep an account with a company after it was free for years. Pretty much their strategic decision is that after somebody has established credit with them, they will hold the account ransom and make you pay montly for it. I recommend having 3 or 4 credit cards from diff companies to avoid this. If there are any class action lawsuits for these dubious practices, I want in, my email is
