I usually write a personal check to pay my rent, on time, every month, on the first. At that time, the funds are still in my account. I subtract those funds from my account on a piece of paper i keep in my chequebook balance pad so I know how much I have for other things.
I dont even have a landlord. I have a "broker". How's that sound? I live in an apartment complex that is ran by a (Get this) CORPORATION that way if the place burns to the ground nobody can sue for damages. Well, this broker, is AWFULLY lazy. HE HELD 5 MONTHS WORTH OF RENT, DECIDED TO DEPOSIT ALL 5 CHECKS AT ONCE 5 MONTHS LATER, AND ALL BUT ONE THEM BOUNCED, OVERDRAWING MY BANK ACCOUNT BY 1,131 DOLLARS! To make matters worse, I even WROTE on the check "DO NOT CASH AFTER 30 DAYS, SEE ME FOR CASH PAYMENT" Pnc bank stated to me (and I always get some ignorant bitch on the phone who doesn't want to talk to me, as if i've interrupted her lunch break) that it's my fault and i've got to pay! Not only that, but they hit me up for a $30.00 nsf fee FIVE TIMES I guess apparantly the first time the broker tried cashing the checks he found out "duh moron you can't keep a personal check for anything after 30 days" he decided to do it five more times, and I'm owing them in excess of 1200 dollars.
Lucky for me I know one of the branch managers and she refunded the NSF charges but, as for the 1131 dollars i'm out that indefinitely, AND i still owe the money to the landlord! Hows that for crap? AND ITS HIS FAULT! I can't file a complaint against him for his laziness, I filed it against PNC for actually TRYING to cash the damn checks when they had DO NOT CASH AFTER 30 DAYS written on them IN MY HANDWRITING!
After filing the complaint, nothing was done about it surprise surprise, either the papers i filed were lost, or, as plainly put by one of the other branch managers i spoke with "I can't do anything about it, I really dont' care to its not my problem you dont have any money you either pay or your account gets closed."
Well f*! # that, the account is closed, my credit went down the toilet, and i am now back home with my parents at age 24 because of this bullshit. I got evicted because some lazy ass didn't want to drive his brand new car down to the bank and deposit the check. (after I tell him over the phone repeatedly to cash them IMMEDIATELY) Imagine that he didnt even want to admit his own fault.
Do not open an account with pnc bank, regardless of whether or not it's free checking! All your funds are not available immediately, they hold things and put them through at the *worst* times, none of their employees are very nice people, they question you about why you want statements printed, who's it going to (none of your damn business!), they charged me 5 dollars to replace my debit card after they sent it to the wrong address to begin with and because they sent it to the wrong address, they then also charged me for someone who was once close to me stealing it, signing my name on the back and using it (retailers only compare the signature on the back of the card to the on on the reciept)! Do not open a bank account with any major bank! Stick to your local credit union!
