PNC Bank charging NSF fees for paid items with a positive balance

I have been a PNC customer for about four years, and have had instances where my account was charged NSF fees in the past without me understanding why. I believe I now understand it... They charge $36 per item fees for paid transactions!

I had four transactions clear my account yesterday, all paid (not overdrafted or returned) and with a positive balance at the end of the day. I have two check card transactions pending which are not posted to my account until Monday, and also direct deposits pending which are more than enough to cover these items. PNC will occasionally, but not always, credit deposits on Saturday so I logged in to my account online to check my balance. Imagine my surprise when I saw that I had been assessed $142 in NSF fees for the four PAID transactions that went through yesterday!

I called PNC customer service, to be told that while the items were in fact paid without any overdraft, the pending transactions (but of course not the deposits) were counted against my balance so "technically" even though the money was there to pay all four transactions with a positive balance, they were paid but still considered overdrafts. WHAT?!?!?!

I was then informed that, even if I were to deposit enough money to cover the overdraft fees by Monday, the two outstanding items would still be charged NSF fees as overdrafts because the account has a negative available balance while they are pending. The balance when they are actually posted to my account doesn't matter. That's another $72 in fees, plus an additional $21 in per day overdraft charges bringing the total in fees to $241 for six items that were not overdrafted!

This is beyond abusive. I am absolutely disgusted.
