Disgusting hidden contracts and fees

I have been a customer of Directv for 6 years, and only got them in the first place because the apt complex I moved to had an exclusive contract with Directv, so that was the only TV you could get. Once I passed the first two years contract, I was free to leave. I kept them only because when I moved to a new house, we liked the service and the move installation was free. BUT, then when I complained that new subscribers were getting better deals, and I needed the HD receiver after buying a new HD TV, the cust svce rep told me he would cut me a "break" and "give" me the receiver for free. That's where my trouble stems from. If you agree to take new equipment, you are apparently bound to a new "contract" agreement for a length of time. I was never told this, and now that I am trying to cancel my service, I am told that I would have to pay a $20/mo fee for each month I have left on the contract. When I complained to a manager, her response was "you agreed when we sent you this information with your next bill and when the hd receiver was activated." I pointed out to her that the activation occured BEFORE any agreement was sent out, so isn't it like "too late, so sad, so bad?" They had already activated it by the time I received the next bill. When I told her I would never have agreed to take the receiver if it locked me into another contract, I demanded proof of any recording of my conversation with that rep because I know he never mentioned it. Her response was that they don't have that access. I said SOMEONE has that access! They then indicated that they would charge the balance due on the card I have on file. I expressely told them they could not. Yes, this info is printed on the back of their bills "for your CONVENIENCE", no, it's for their's. Fine, but I did not agree to any contract in the first place. This practice is deceptive. And if you look online at your account, NO WHERE does it indicated "oh, by the way, you have a "contract" with us, and you have X number of months left on it". By the way, Directv, if you are reading this, even if I do pay you the cancellation fee, I'm getting better tv package with COX than I ever got from yo-for practically the same package I was paying you $135 a month, with all my receivers and fees, and I'll be paying COX less than half that WITHOUT ANY CONTRACTS
