As listed in the subject line, there are actually two topics here. Every time I go through the process of balancing my checking account, I find numbers that do not add up on their end. I have tried to figure the numbers the way they do, but we never see eye to eye. Once I subtract the items that have not cleared and match all of the transactions, my balance and their balance should match (this is after I have checked my math). Inevitably, there is usually a difference of $200 or more. Sometimes the money goes back on - other times they show more than we do. Where is the money? Where does it come from, where does it go? How do I know what is mine so I can find a new bank?
Recently, they took out money for a debit purchase. We were even able to view the transaction online. Then the transaction "disappeared" and the money was still listed in the account. Then the transaction "reappeared" and the money was once again gone. This disappearing, reappearing of funds took one week.
The other problem: I visit my mother only once or twice a year. She lives in Georgia, I live in Tennessee. Every time I use one particular ATM that says it is a SunTrust machine, I am charged $3.50. When I called to have the charge removed and explained that these were, in fact, SunTrust ATMs, the lady on the phone tried to argue with me. Her argument was that they wouldn't have charged me if it was one of theirs (even though using one owned by another bank usually incurs 2 charges). She reluctantly agreed to reverse the charges when I said I received confirmation information from a branch in Georgia.
