On Oct 14th I urgently needed cash to repair a flat tire. All I had on me were two Shell gas cards issued by Citibank, and I was standing at a BofA ATM. Because these are gas cards rather than true credit cards, I assumed that taking cash out would involve an ATM fee and a Shell fee. Clearly I skipped the fine print at the time I applied through Shell / Citibank. Anyway...
I was able to take only $20 from each card, since each has a $25 cash advance cap. The BofA ATM charged me $3 per withdrawal, $6.00 in all. Two weeks later the Shell statement arrived, showing a $10 fee on each transaction, $20 in total. So borrowing $40 cost me $26 in fees! Is this country really fine with that kind of highway robbery? I phoned Shell (1-800-664-3051, open M-F 8am - 8pm ET).
The reply I got was that reading the fine print is my responsibility. Fine, but I could have been hit for $30 or $40 in charges??? Shell has just lost a customer.
