I was having my credit checked in order to buy my first home. A good friend of mine is my loan officer. I have never been late on a payment. He returned my call after he checked my credit, explaining to me that my credit was perfect except for this "bp/citi account," which showed a 30-day, 90-day, and 120-day past-due payment, followed by "account closed at credit grantor's request." BP/Citi? No phone number, no one to talk to about it, just a P.O. Box for a company that apparently doesn't even exist? Unbelievable. It happened to me.
I absolutely never used money from this company! BP/Citi has in no way, shape, or form ever contacted me about anything, EVER! I am totally dumbfounded as to what my rights are and what I can do about it. Meanwhile, there is a perfect little house in a perfect spot that I otherwise would have absolutely no trouble getting a loan for if it weren't for this extremely fraudulent flaw on my credit report, apparently the result of someone else using my identity for a gain of merely $275/$596! I have other accounts that I had been using from 2/02 to 10/02.
It is my opinion that these fraudulent practices within white-collar crime cost this country, and each one of our hard-working taxpayers, more money than anything else.
I was robbed and tied up at knifepoint a few years back, and the person who did it went to jail for 8 years. That incident didn't affect my ability to reach my dreams. This fraudulent credit incident, at a mere gain of $275 to the criminal who stole it from me, is a much more invasive crime because I am not able to fulfill my dream of owning the home I want. Also, the interest I will be paying as a result of these fraudulent practices will cost me as much money as it would have cost me to go to nursing school. This needs to stop!
