I am a 17 year customer of Dish Network. I own a Dish network receiver from years ago when Dish still allowed its customers to purchase receivers. I called about an offer received in the mail for a "Free Hopper and Joey" receiver pair. I spoke to a customer support rep and was told first that they had to disable the old receiver if I accepted a Hopper. The rep could not tell me why and so I asked for a next level customer service rep. A different person came on and tried to tell me that the Hopper and Joey use totally different satellites that were not compatible. I told her that was not an idiot and that I know that the DISH Network did not launch a different satellite constellation just to support a new receiver. Then she tried to tell me that the Hopper and Joey would not work if a older receiver was connected to the same satellite dish. Again I told her that she was not being truthful. Finally I hung up and found a dish network site that stated that it is a Dish policy that prevents leaving old receivers activated on the same account with a hopper. So, Dish is actually trying to get rid of all of the old receivers that customer own probably so that they can start charging in the future for their equipment. Or because they cannot apply their customer data gathering algorithms to older customer owned but otherwise fully functional receivers. Dish makes big bucks selling consumer viewing data to advertisers so that they can target sell their crap to them based on viewing habits. If they can't collect the data then they can't sell it. Nothing in life is free!
