Access America / Jefferson Insurance / BCS Insurance Company / World Access Service Corp. Unfair travel insurance claim denials

Our grandmother died from dementia in the middle of our scheduled vacation. We canceled a vacation to attend to her funeral. Our claim for reimbursement for a canceled airline ticket we insured with Access America was denied because, according to Access America, Death of a Family member does not include death due to the "complications of a mental condition". What??? What difference should the reason a family member died matter? Apparently, somewhere buried in the bullet points under General Exclusions is a vague clause that we should have had interpreted by a legal expert that says that "consequences" of a mental condition are not covered.

I am surprised that we missed that - they were clearly spelling out that if your grandmother dies and has dementia or Alzhiemer's either, her death is not covered under the Death of a Family member coverage. Also, they denied it for an additional back-up reason, because, "she had dementia before we bought the travel insurance" so it was a death caused by a "pre-existing condition", which they do not cover. What 95 year old nursing home patient doesn't have a touch of dementia. Even though granny actually died of natural causes at age 95, they used her dementia diagnosis to deny our claim.

Almost everyone, except an accident victim dies of a pre-existing condition. We lost almost $900 plus their $50 premium on a ticket we had to cancel to attend a funeral. The only death claim they will pay on appears to be a direct hit from a meteorite, but that is also questionable with Access America. Don't waste your money AND take a minute to send a comment to the travel site where you but your tickets that www.accessamerica.com and/or their underwriter Jefferson Insurance of Richmond, Va. Is a bad link to have on their website. I will not use a website for travel arrangements that has Access America anywhere on it. We can and should fight back.
