Passing out forms, collecting your info, then calling later and saying you've won a vacation. Rockford, Illinois

These scammers posing as travel agents passed out flyers advertising a chance to win a vacation at the Rockford Speedway in Rockford, Illinois, on the 4th of July. I filled out the little form as did hundreds of others I'm sure for a chance to win a vacation. No surprise when I never heard anything. I had in fact forgotten all about it.

Until tonight, August 7, when this guy calling himself Steve Dolan calls 'from the Rockford Speedway' to tell me I have won the vacation. Only the area code on the number isn't right, so I'm suspicious. But he convinces me with a piece of information from the form—my occupation—that he MIGHT be legit.

He's a little appalled that I'm not more excited about winning this travel extravaganza—8 days, 7 nights in Orlando, then 3 days in Daytona Beach, which won't that be fun since I'm obviously a racing fan, followed by a cruise to Ft. Lauderdale. All of this supposedly sponsored by the Ramada hotel chain.

It's when he wants my credit card information to hold the $99.00 each for two adults that I will have to pay though the other two tickets 'are totally free' that I say, "I'm not comfortable with that." "Well, we have to hold it with a credit card or we can award it to the alternate."

And I said, "That's just fine—give it to the alternate." But, in reality, I don't want them to 'give it to' an alternate. Which is why I'm letting other people know here: Don't be taken in by this scam.
