Long distance charges

I am fed up with being billed for long-distance providers that I-donot use. The regular cost today exceeds $18. I've invested over two hours on-hold attempting to stop all long-distance with AT&T, but I've yet to consult with a individual as "we're experiencing hectic problems, your phone is essential to us." So just how long should I wait to obtain service, any service, out of this beast?
