Attempting to collect $ on a canceled membership. Being totally unreasonable and also threatening to send me to collections

Must apologize for the length of my story but it if it helps just one person then it is worth it. I too
My ordeal with L.A. Workout... I was a member for approx. 10 yrs. It started out with tiny rumblings from members sharing with other members. Then it grew, I have read about and heard about the shenanigan's that began occurring over the course of the last few years with regards to suspected shady business ethics as well as suspected shady employees. I started hearing the horror stories of accounts being over-charged, in some cases double billed. These were folks that were current paying members in good standing that thankfully had been vigilant enough to catch these unwarranted charges. When confronted, some employees (not all of the employees were unethical jerks) couldn't even begin to grasp what the big deal was. I don't know how many "oversights" were honest (if not stupid) mistakes or how many were out and out scams but either way there is absolutely no excuse for a business to be conducted in such a manner.

Then there was the fiasco regarding the gym losing its lease and the horrible lack of accurate or at the very least adequate communication during this ordeal. Witnessing memberships still being sold when they weren't even sure they had a place to move to. People at the front desk were either clueless or could care less. I couldn't take anymore drama so I sent in a family cancellation request. The account was under my name, other family members were considered "add-ons". They apparently lost the first letter so I sent a second one. This time I sent it certified (yes, I should have sent the first one that way, my bad). I never heard from them again so I figured it was settled. Oh boy was I wrong! Approx. 41/2 months later from the date of the second family cancellation letter (approx. 8 months after the first letter) comes an email from a one Mellisa Bayles. Apparently at least one of my letters had been acknowledged. They canceled my prepaid membership, and my husband's prepaid membership but not my daughter's. To this day they are still running the meter on her membership. Threats of sending me to collection's have been made.

I made numerous attempts to get to the bottom of things but to no avail. The numerous inane, rude and unprofessional emails from Ms. Bayles conveys to me what I have suspected for some time now, and that is, that it seems Mr. (Jim) Brewer is surrounding himself with unethical, not altogether-too-bright, low quality employees (again, I must clarify, that there are a few intelligent, loyal and caring employees that remain, but their numbers have diminished greatly over the last few years).

I informed Ms. Bayles via email that I wanted nothing more to do with her. I also emailed a Jasmine Sanchez and forwarded her all of my email correspondences involving Ms. Bayles, but again, no response. I then sent yet another email to L.A. Workout customer services but have not heard back from that attempt either. On 1/17 we received a call from Trina (McPhearson), she left a message and number with my son. After a number of attempts to reach her I was finally successful. On 1/23 I thought I reached an agreement over the phone (w/Trina) that would have settled matters. That same day I sent a certified letter that had everything in it to put the matter to rest once and for all. According to the tracking receipt, they refused to sign for my letter, it was returned to the post office where it will sit for two weeks unless someone either signs for it or it will be returned to me.

I am currently in contact with other former members that are outraged by their similar past experiences with L.A. Workout and are interested in exploring and possibly exercising their legal options. Feel free to message me or email me with your story if you feel you have been wronged by L.A. Workout and are interested in joining us.
P.S. If they call you to join their gym run and don't look back!!! Btw the Oxnard L.A. Workout is officially out of business, bad omen if you ask me!
