Two fast-talking "step-sisters, " one a senior in high school and the other her "chaperone", 24, were selling
magazine subscriptions so their high school soccer team, Ladies Mayhem, could go to London to the play offs. The "lived a few blocks away on the corner of Holly and 8th."
I wrote two checks for two subscriptions, but became suspicious when they added "tax for Uncle Sam" in an unrealistic amount. I questioned it and they removed the tax. (?!) They asked for something to drink and a snack. I gave them each apple juice and a banana.
After they left I asked the neighbor boy who is on the boys soccer team about this girls team. He said there is no girls soccer team in our town! (We don't have kids. I wouldn't know.) They said the neighbor across the street bought a subscription to a kids magazine for a children's hospital. I later asked him. Not true. He sent them away.
Am cancelling the checks in the morning. So sad when young people get into the con business at such young ages!
