Try to cancel a contract

Quoting a movie that was recently on tv—i feel like i have just been screwed and my pants are still on!!!
First let me tell you that I love the people who work at the at my fitness center but I totally dislike corporate office and the policies they enforce to manipulate their clients.
I signed a contract for one year of personal training where I paid for the first month and the last month up front and paid (via a charge card) monthly payments of 159.00. March was the first month and Feb. 2010 should have been the last pre-paid month.
On Jan 7, I approached the personal training desk and asked what was the procedure to cancel the contract. The head trainer said we could cancel the contract right there. We proceeded to do that and he gave me a copy of the cancellation. Before I left I again asked him if the was totally done and he said yes.
I watched my credit card and indeed no charges were applied. I was thrilled until on Feb 23 I received a voice mail on my cell for Paramount. I called immediately and was told that my credit card had been declined when they tried to put on the Feb charge. I told them it was declined because the contract was cancelled. He (T.J.) put me on hold for awhile only to come back and tell me my cancellation was denied by Paramount. There was no notification to me that it was "denied."
Now they started to play the game of pass the buck and gave me all sorts of numbers that I must call to further investigate which I did the very next business day. I could go on but the bottom line is that they are not honoring a cancelled contract that was done according to their instruction and with their own people. Supposedly it has been cancelled again but they are holding me to one and quite possibly two extra months of payments. I want to know where my pre-paid "last month" comes into play.
I am very angry and frustrated and want to warn any future clients to thinks long and hard before agreeing to work with Global Fitness/Urban Active and mostly their billing agencies. The trainers are very good but they are going to lose lots of future work because this word will get out. It is just not worth the stress and financial drain for a company that is abusive and uses intimidation just for money.
