Deliberate Deception to Dodge Cancellation

This complaint has to do with my attempt to cancel the contract within 24 hours of signing but I was put off and given the runaround by the employees until after my three-day grace period; when I was finally scheduled to be seen to sign paperwork to cancel, they gave me a blank sheet of paper to sign. Please see the timeline below.

9/26 (Wednesday) signed up for Singles Plus with Debbie. I put $100 on my credit card and asked that the other $200 for the deposit be taken out Friday when I get paid.

9/27 (Thursday) called less than 24 hours later to say that I felt uncomfortable with the decision, both with respect to cost and that I felt pressured. I had to call several different phone numbers before I reached a person. One phone number was from my caller ID when they set up the appointment. The others were from the internet. I reached a woman and explained to her that I would like to cancel. She said I would have to do that through Debbie, who signed me up. She said she would have Debbie call me back. Debbie did call back within 15 minutes or so. I explained to her I would like to cancel. She said I would need to come back to the office and fill out some paperwork. I said that was no problem, I had Friday off I could come back any time. She said she would be in the Myrtle Beach office on Friday, but she would call me Friday to set something up for Saturday. I asked her if the remainder of my deposit would come out of my bank account; she said no, it would not.

9/28 (Friday) Debbie did not call. Around 4:00 P.M. I called two different phone numbers that I had for Singles Plus and left messages that I needed to schedule a time to come in the office Saturday to cancel, per Debbie. No one called back. My bank account was not charged the remaining $200.

9/29 (Saturday) Debbie called and said she was still in Myrtle Beach. She said we could meet at the office Monday afternoon. I expressed concern that that was beyond the three day time-frame which I can cancel in. She said it was no problem, I called within the three days, I was good to
go, and we could do the paperwork Monday.

10/01 (Monday morning) Debbie called me on my mobile phone in the morning to tell me her manager agreed to reduce the number of payments on my contract from 11 payments to 6 payments. I said that I really cannot afford the plan, and I wasnt comfortable with the arrangement and that I had signed up under pressure I dont make decisions well under pressure. She said they would have to collect the balance of the deposit. I said that she said on Thursday they wouldnt process the remainder of the deposit. She said they just wouldnt do it Friday until she had a chance to talk to me, but paragraph 4 in the contract said the deposit wasnt refundable. So, I said fine, Ill release the remainder of the deposit and cut my losses, but I want to continue to cancel my membership. She said I could come by the office in the afternoon and she would let (someone I think she said Laura or Laurie or something like that) know that I was coming. (Although I was initially waiting to meet specifically with her to cancel according to their policies, now it appears I could cancel with another employee.) After I got off the phone, I checked my bank balance and the $200 had been taken from my account.

10/01 (Monday afternoon) That afternoon I went to their office. After several minutes, a woman came out and led me to a room with a table. She said she was expecting me. Then she got a BLANK sheet of paper (she said their computers had been down all day) and said for me to write on it that I wanted to cancel, print and sign my name and put todays date. I said that todays date wouldnt fall within the 3-day rule to cancel. She said that was ok, she was the one I talked to who had Debbie call me back initially and she knew I called within the three days. So I wrote a statement that I wanted to cancel, I printed and signed my name, then I dated it 10/1. She took the paper. I asked for a copy and she made one. I left, got to my car, then realized I would feel more comfortable if she signed the paper, too, since it didnt have a letterhead or anything. So I went back inside, she came out of the room she was in immediately and I asked her if she would sign her name and write that I called on Thursday. She said sure, asked what that date was and I told her the 27th. She handed the paper back to me and I asked her if she wanted a copy of that and she said no, they would take care of it.

11/2 (Friday morning) My bank account has been charged the first installment of the contract that was supposed to have been cancelled. Ive filed a complaint with the local Better Business Bureau.
