I had a run in with Kmart this past May when I was trying to return a wedding gift. My great aunt who is 83 years old bought me one towel and one wash cloth as a wedding present. She lives in SC and I live in FL. Since this was a WEDDING present, of course there isnt going to be a receipt. I knew they came from Kmart becasue they were Martha Stewert brand and the last time I checked, Kmart was the only retail store carring Martha.
When I went to the Customer Service Desk-thats a contradiction if there ever was one-I explained to the sales clerk that I just wanted to exchange them, that they were a wedding gift and that there was only one wash cloth and one towel. I also showed her the tag that was attached, the one thats perforated that has to be removed before you can use it.
The sales clerk gave me the song and dance about "no receipt-no exchange". I again told her this was a wedding gift from an out of town relitive who is 83 years old. Finally I asked to speak w/a manager. I told him the situation and showed him the attached tags. Finally after repeating the same story twice to him he did scan the bar code and turns out the stuff was only worth 5.00 TOTAL. The manager told me to go get what I wanted and bring it back. I returned with a photo album and a chenille throw. The stuff I bought was 45.00. Thats more than double what I brought back.
The manager did tell me that these were corporate rules and not his. I told him with all the hassels that I went thru that I'll never buy another gift for anyone there. So this Christmas when its busy, I thought I'd go in about 30 mins till close, wait till theres tons of people behind me trying to check out, let Kmart ring up my purchases and then ask about their return policy since these are all gifts. Then when they tell me " no receipt-no exchange" I'll walk out and leave them to deal with putting everything back. Maybe if more of us did that, these stores would get the hint and change some of these ridculous rules that drive customers away.
Remember, Kmart closed thousands of their stores. Wonder if maybe it was becasue other stores have return policys.
