I used to think you had some security by purchasing things with a credit card. Capital One has ruined that thought. I purchased a $530.00 digital camera from a fraudulent online dealer, Hotbuys Electronics, who sold me, unknowingly, a gray market Japanese camera, which I cannot use (because the menu on the camera is Japanese and I cannot read Japanese fonts.)
I disputed this purchase with Capital One, thinking it would not be a problem, because it was clearly a fraudulent purchase. After five months of trying to return the camera, exhausting letter writing and phone calls regarding this dispute with Capital One, Capital One wrote their final letter to me, saying that they regretted they "could not assist me in my quest for credit" because I was "unable to supply documentation that the camera was to come with instructions and menu in English versus Japanese.
And that the merchant is under no obligation to accept return of the merchandise as it is the consumer's responsibility to ensure that the merchandise meets all specifications and and needs before engaging in the transaction." Capital One clearly allows businesses to practice fraud and rip off consumers. They offer no protection whatsover. I immediately quit doing business with Capital One, yet they still charged me a $19.00 card renewal fee! Please do not do business with this horrible company if you value your money or your sanity!
