Paying for three different phones but only have one!

In June, my elderly mother received a shut-off notice from the telephone company saying she had a $200 unpaid balance on her bill. My mother never makes long distance calls or accepts collect calls so I knew something was up.

My mother asked me to look at them and I discovered that for the past 6 months my mother had not only been paying for her phone service but 2 other people's phone services as well (as a matter of fact, one of the people's phone services she had been paying for was for a cellphone customer through Sprint).

I call Verizon and explain the situation, I get placed on hold and then hung up on. I call back and am placed on hold for over 20 minutes to be told that my mother should have read her bill more carefully and this wouldn't have occurred, basically shifting the blame to my mother.
READ YOUR BILLS CAREFULLY AND ALWAYS CHECK THE ACCOUNT NUMBER!!! My mother learned that the hard way.
