I received an email today from Zappos.com stating the following: "We are writing to let you know that there may have been illegal and unauthorized access to some of your customer account information on Zappos.com, including one or more of the following: your name, e-mail address, billing and shipping addresses, phone number, the last four digits of your credit card number (the standard information you find on receipts), and/or your cryptographically scrambled password (but not your actual password)."

With the current problem of rampant identity theft, this communication from Zappos causes major concern about the security of my private account information. This is absolutely not acceptable.

Since my shopping experience with Zappos.com has been positive in the past, I attempted to contact their customer service department for further explanation about this serious matter. The toll free phone number for Zappos (800-927-7671) is not accepting calls. A recorded message referred me to the online help tab on their website. The online help tab on their website is presently referring inquiries to their toll free phone number.

Still seeking some form of response, I called the Zappos corporate office phone number (702-943-7777) located in Henderson, Nevada. The receptionist who answered the phone was not at all helpful. She stated that phone calls were not being accepted on their toll free line. She would not respond to any of my questions about the security compromise of my private account information. She simply referred me back to the online help tab on the Zappos website.

Not only is this situation unacceptable, the non-response from Zappos.com regarding my concern about their security failure is completely unprofessional.

I would strongly advise all customers of Zappos.com to beware of fraudulent use of your private account information, with any online retailer or service. Not to mention the expected onslaught of email spam.

I will no longer conduct any shopping with Zappos.com.
