From the start of my "move" I felt like a stooge. Everything was going to cost extra, the rolls of tape, the shrink wrap (which I knew about) the length of my driveway, the weight if over the estimate, the length of time my daughter might keep a driver waiting at the other end of the delivery.
I felt like my estimate was just the starting point.
However, I pushed on. I began to feel odd about the whole thing when they were saying a couple of small items (vacuum cleaner, ski poles and a bedside table) would cost about $50. Extra & before they knew what my total cubic footage might be.
I was thinking I might be well under the estimate because I had taken away a chest of drawers, a double stack of solid wood bookshelves.
However, once in the truck I could not get them to organize my items in such a way as to determine the actual cubic footage. I took photographs of them just sitting down and not cooperating with me. I was told by the sales people that this would be my guarantee. They said I would be able to actually see the amount of the shipment so I would know the final cost. This was heading into being impossible.
I went back into the house, gathered up the moving documents: list of items, contract etc. And locked myself into my room and called the police. When he came he said, "why don't you just fire them?" So I did.
However, the scene of the two guys putting my furniture back into my house was painful as they scratched my living room floor in three or four places... More or less on purpose.
I wrote "fired for sloppy packing of the truck" on the documents and kept the original copies. I have a $200 deposit that I have disputed but have had problems (with a locksmith who destroyed my hardware) getting my money back in the past.
Since, I have called the larger moving companies to be told to hire the Box Brothers who specialize in smaller loads. They arrive with a truck and a scale... No guessing.
