AT&T wireless sent me an offer for a $50 credit if I committed to another year. I sent in the little card and received the credit on my next bill. I got another little card. I thought they were being generous because of the new number portability law that allows you to keep your cell number if you switch carriers. I filled it out and sent it in. They gave me another credit. I received a third, sent it in, they gave me another credit.By now I just thought I was committed to AT&T for 3 more years.
Four months later there was a charge on my bill for $100 for "promotion." I called was told it was "our error" and that I should not have been given the second or third credits, and that I must pay them back now. I wrote a letter disputing the charge. I wrote another letter. They continued to bill me the $100 plus "late charges." It's been over two months with no response except an e-mail stating "the charges are correct."
I pay my bills on time for actual use early and my account is current but for the "promotion" item. I just received a nastygram stating my service would be terminated if I did not pay. I called again and the rep raised his voice, wouldn't listen, talked over me, stating I was "taking advantage of AT&T, " and that it was "just like when your bank accidentally puts money in your account" - i.E. It's not yours to spend. He said "go ahead and take us to court - it won't get anywhere."
AT&T has admitted twice that they mistakenly gave these repeat credits to many people, yet they are treating me as though I am just a person who won't pay her bill. I have been a customer since 1997.
