I went to get cell phones two years ago and when they ran my husbands credit, they told us that he'd had an unpaid bill from a previous account. To start the new account, we'd have to pay the old bill. We were surprised to hear about the old bill, but he had moved shortly after having the phone turned off and figured that the bill was legit and paid it right away. Had to pay the maximum deposit because he now had bad credit with them, bought a phone at full price and picked up a total freedom plan with a heafty monthly price.
Cut to two years later, I pulled my husbands credit report to check for any errors and guess what I found... First line Alltel - $100.12 charged off. I called customer service and told them that I still had the service agreement showing that I'd paid two years ago when I started our new phone. The first lady, "Tiffany" told me to go to the local office and give them her fax number and have them fax it to her. After doing so, I called to confirm reciept of the sevice agreement I got another lady, "Rachel" (a real personality, yes I am being sarcastic) she informed me that I would have to "prove" that I'd paid and that a reciept written out and signed by THEIR employee wouldn't cut it. She needed a cancelled check that had cleared the bank to remove it from his credit report, apparently the woman who'd taken care of us when we bought them hadn't applied it to his old account correctly. How that equates to MY problem, I'm not quite sure. (Please keep in mind that I now have TWO phones with their service, have had them for two years and have NEVER paid late at over a hundred dollars a month) I'd have to go to my bank and buy the cancelled check from two years ago, and again go back to their office to fax it to her.
I could not believe the lack of common sense while dealing with anyone that I encounered during trying to take care of this. They would not realize that I wouldn't have an account now had I not paid the previous bill. They told me I couldn't have an account with the old outstanding balance. They are ridiculously stupid and stubborn to a total fault. A current customer that has paid over $1800.00 on a current account but they have to "prove" their check cleared from two years ago to pay an old $100 bill. A very sad example of the lack of common sense in corperate america.
