46 dogs seized near Albany; four charged
TOWN OF DECATUR - Four people are charged with mistreating animals and 46 dogs were seized Wednesday after the Green County Sheriff's Department executed a search warrant at N4651 County F, Decatur Township, about 3 three miles south of Albany.
The four people charged with mistreating animals were Allyson Williams, 24, Melissa Harrel, 57, Kathy Williams, 54 and Donavan Williams, 45.
Deputies investigated a report of a large number of Great Danes being raised in the home. The sheriff's department said it has received seven similar complaints since February. A recent event provided probable cause for a search warrant.
Deputies seized the dogs Wednesday afternoon after a veterinarian determined the animals were at great risk. There were five mixed breed dogs and the remainder appeared to be pure bred Great Danes. Twelve are puppies.
Based on space and sanitation concerns, the health of the animals and the individuals at the home were greatly at risk, according to the sheriff's department.
The Green County Humane Society responded to the scene and transported all of the dogs to sites where the animals have nourishment, room and adequate sanitary conditions.
The Green County Humane Society will be housing the dogs as long as is necessary for evidentiary purposes. Great Danes have special dietary needs and cannot have food over a certain percentage of protein, officials said. GCHS has requested donations to purchase food for the dogs that would provide them with a consistent diet.
