I feel like such a fool after reading these two usacomplaints.com because I thought I searched Beverly and Tom Jenkins name everywhere but did not know I was buying a dog with "cedar retreat kennels." I found them on puppyfinder looking for a toy american eskimo. I emailed her and heard back right away. This should have been my first clue - the other well reputable breeders I contacted said their litters were purchased well before they were born and I would have to wait a year. I was impatient and did not want to wait. Beverly said she had puppies right away. I was not ready "RIGHT AWAY" so I wasn't very persistent but she was. She called, emailed, now that I look back... She wanted to get rid of these puppies. After a couple months she had another litter and contacted me again. This time I was ready for a puppy and the freaking pictures were too adorable.
I wanted the smallest one - I asked her how the parents were and she said both of them were under 6 pounds and the smallest of their litter was the smallest one she had ever seen and it would definitely be under 6 pounds. I chose that one and we waited for her for 6 weeks. The money transaction was an issue, the shipping was an issue, the list goes on. FINALLY she shipped her in a crate that was WAY too big for the two puppies that came. They had been tossed around and were covered in... Well you get the picture, but they also had what looked like hay or barn something imbedded in their hair. I washed her forever trying to get that crap out of her hair, I could just imagine how neglected they were out in that barn. She was a great puppy... All she did was sleep. Then all of a sudden we realized her jaw was growing oddly. Then soon she couldn't close her mouth properly. We took her to the vet and the vet was appalled that someone was breeding dogs like this. She has a disease that runs in her genes (despite what Beverly says, she said it was my fault, that I raised her incorrectly) that gives her such a severe underbite, I will have to put her down soon. Her teeth are coming out of her mouth, she cannot close her mouth properly, and because her teeth stick out of her mouth at all times, they are oxidizing and are brown. My vet told me there is NO WAY this breeder does not know this runs in the line - its from breeding down (size wise) too fast.BY THE WAY my "toy" is well over 12 pounds and she is not overweight, she is almost underweight for her size, the vet told us "this is definitely not a toy breed." They could tell us that the first month we had her, as she miraculously gained a TON OF WEIGHT the first month I had her home.
I've had this dog almost a year now and she will have to be put down WAY too early after I have spent thousands in vet bills for her jaw problems. Our vet is absolutely horrified and said she has never seen anything like this. When I contacted Beverly about this issue, her response: "there is no way this runs in the line. I have NEVER heard of this! You must have done something wrong in raising her." I told her about my vet and how horrified she was and showed her the pictures MY VET took and told her my vet would gladly have some "words" for her about this issue and how it is impossible this is my fault, this is a genetic disorder and definitely runs in the line. She FINALLY freaked out when she saw the pictures and said this was HORRIBLE and couldn't believe how awful my dog looked. She did not ever tell me it was my fault ever again, her next response: "just put her down and I'll send you a new one. You need to decide how much money you are going to waste trying to save this dog. There comes a point where it is not worth it - put her down." ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Like I have no emotional attachment to this dog?! All she cares about is that nobody knows about it, so of course she will send me another one of her "toy" dogs and hopes that its not deformed. She repeatedly told me she would give me a free puppy but not give me my money back. All I want is the money to pay for the vet bills, I'm not going to put this poor girl down before she absolutely has to be. She told me she would contact me at the beginning of the year (January) to send me another dog and told me not to worry, I wouldn't have to send my dog back to her, just get it put down. I sent her an email back that said I just wanted my money. No response. I haven't heard from her since. I would take her dog and sell it for the money but I do NOT want to subject someone else to the horror I have endured. This experience has been horrible.
Watch out, she's very good with words, she will make you feel so sorry for her, and make you think she is so kind. ALSO watch out, SHE DOES REUSE the same pictures on puppyfinder over and over again. My "dog" or is she? Is still posted on their website! Just like the previous person said, she told me to "think it over" and she would contact me in January about a new dog. ITS LIKE WORD FOR WORD the same situation. I will never forgive myself for not waiting for a puppy from a reputable toy american eskimo breeder... But hopefully this will help to get her to stop breeding deformed dogs.
