Traveltoday Bill for room, but no reservation

I reserved my motel room for October 3, but made the mistake of doing it twice. I called the company within 5 to 10 minutes and told them of my mistake. They charged me $25 for one cancelation. That didn't set good with me, but it was my mistake.
My husband and I went to the motel on October 3rd only to find out there was NO reservation. I was orginally charged $77.40 for the room in advance. I made the mistake of using my debit card. The motel had never heard of this company and the only way I could get a room was to pay again. This time it was $55.00. This made the total spent $157.40
When I got home I called the company. They claim the mix up was the fault of the motel. They said the motel would credit me with the $55. After hanging up I called the motel back. They told me they were not affiliated with this company, but would credit me the $55. The catch to the whole thing was that the company (Trails.com) had to give the motel a credit card number to bill them. If they were affiliated this shouldn't happen.
I have learned never to use this type of company again. I will deal directly with the motel. I have also learned not to use my debit card, instead I will use American Express.
