* CONSUMER ALERT *DISCLAIMER: THIS IS A CONSUMER WARNING WRITTEN BY AVICTIM OF PEOPLES CHOICE REAL ESTATE, LLC AND NOT AFOREMENTIONED COMPANY PeoplesChoice Real Estate, LLC359Broadway, Brooklyn, NY 11211718-782-2400/ fax 718-782-2445 Peoples Choice Real Estate, LLC Wherewere willing to say anything to make your money our money. Guaranteed. WARNING TO ALL NYCLANDLORDS: Do not use this company tolease your properties as they conduct business like a coven of dishonest and unprofessionaljackasses who will hurt your reputation by your association with them. WARNING TO ALL NYC RENTERS: If you respond to a craigslist or otherhousing ad and learn that there is a management company showing the apartment, collecting security deposit and rent for the first month, etc. Be verycareful in who you are dealing with. Ask them for the name of the company theperson works for. If it is Peoples Choice Real Estate, LLC or youre told tocome to the above address then you may want to keep on looking. They will paintyou a nice picture: 1) a 30-day clause on the lease saying that you will getyour security deposit back if you give notice that you will be moving out with30 days advance; 2) that youll get to have a meet up with ALL prospective roommates prior to move-in and that if you changeyour mind youll get your security deposit back; 3) Theyll tout how good theyare at finding cool people to move in together (which is silly to take creditfor, New Yorkers are cool so if you happened to be looking for an apartmenthere then what could you expect to happen?). An example of the true nature oftheir business practices are as follows: On November 17 I went intotheir office and filled out an application for an apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant. One of their agents had shown me an apartment in Bushwick as well. I haddecided to go with the apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Neither apartment hadbeen filled yet. I had hoped to move in sooner than later, so I noted on myapplication that I was interested in either apartment but filled theapplication out for the Bedford-Stuyvesant address. I paid my security deposit in cash and wasgiven a receipt signed by the supervisor, Mickey. I met one of the roommatesfor the apartment in Bed-Stuy that night. On November 23 I textedtheir agent, Nathan, asking when I could get my keys for the address inBed-Stuy and he responded, Like tom or wed at latest. To which, I responded: Is there a meet up with the other tenants? Nathan: Yeah. Im trying toorganize. I heard nothing from Nathan onNovember 24, so on November 25 I texted Nathan: Any word on a meetup or move in {at Bed-Stuy address)? Nathan responded: Move in and meet upMonday. I had not heard from Nathan regarding a meet up between November 26 through November 30 (Monday), so I called him and asked for mysecurity deposit back as my employment situation was about to change for theworse and I would need to go back to Tennessee. He said that I could get mysecurity deposit back, but that he was on his way to NYC from spendingThanksgiving somewhere. Later, I texted him, When can I come by the office topick up my deposit? Nathan responded, Im almost back. Ill call you soon. Nathan did not return my phone call that evening. On December 1 I calledNathan and asked when I could pick up my security deposit. He said I could come by the office at anytime. When I arrive at the office, Nathan was not there. So, I explained to another polite gentleman who workedthere that Nathan had said I could come by to pick up my security deposit. Hesaid that I would have to wait to speak to their supervisor, Mickey. He saidthat Mickey would be back in a little while. I waited about 20 minutes and hecame back and said that since Mickey was sympathetic to my situation they wouldgive me half of my security deposit back, even though they had failed toschedule a meet up with the other roommates. I was then told that it had beentoo long all of 13 days and that I had been out of contact, which wasuntrue. I had repeatedly called or texted Nathan during those 13 days. It wastheir incompetence that prevented a meet up with the other roommates at theBed-Stuy apartment from ever taking place. After waiting for about 2 hoursfor Mickey to show up I was asked to leave the office and come back at 5PM. Upon doing this, I waited for Mickeysome more. He tried to tell me that the application for the apartment was thesame thing as a contract and that because I had written that I was interestedin either apartment that I had to take the Bushwick apartment. Following their own procedures for leasing anapartment, I should have had to meet ALL of the other tenants and then we allwould have had to approve of each other before moving in. I met only one andfor a different apartment than the one they forced me to move into prior torequesting my security deposit back. Three of the prospective roommates for theBushwick address happened to be in the office while I was making a scene, andso rather than lose the value of my security deposit I moved into the Bushwickaddress. That apartment wasnt even finished or ready for move in over a weekinto the month. After moving all my stuff in, their agent, Joseph (his friendscall him Dante, but I was not treated as a friend) promised the room I hadmoved into to the last tenant to move in on December 08. Also, as I wasunexpectedly unemployed and that was my reason for wanting out of the situationI was not prepared for the situation so I was forced to live off of meagerrations eating once per day (maybe twice if I was feeling like a greedy piggy). So, if youve made it this far through this CONSUMER WARNING then you areforewarned just because the rent is cheap doesnt mean it is worth putting upwith these assholes. Have a nice day and a nice life. May your apartment hunting go well.
