Giant Vanlines
Ripoff

I just read your website and how I regret that I havn't read it earier. I am currently in the process of moving and my stuff is being hijacked by Giant Vanlines at right now. We only paided the first half of the cost, and because I know quite certain that they are cheating us on the weight of our stuff to overcharge us, I asked them to reweight our stuff before we pay the other half.

They rejected, insisted that we pay them full amount first before they unload our stuff. Now they simply disappeared with our stuff. We are cling on the faint hope that we can eventually get back our stuff but don't want them to rip us off again. Could you help us to stop these bad guys and get out of this nightmare? Thanks.

Here is an email that I send to a employee of Giant Vanline that covers the full story:

Hello John:

We had a really rough moving experience up to now, done by your company Giant Vanlines. The move is still not been completed yet. When you first contact me to use your company as the moving company, you ensured me that you company dont overcharge their customer and there is no hidden cost for the move, that your company is one of the few companies that are honest to their customer. I trusted you and ordered the move. However, I am experiencing the most dreadful experience that I had in moving at right now.

The originally estimation of the cost is $1995 for 3070 lbs of our stuff. However, when the drivers load our stuff into their truck, they are giving me a new cost of $5546 for 8680 lbs of my stuff, which is about three times the cost that we were estimated for. The problem is: they have not weighed their truck before they come to pick up our stuff, the new weight is based on the manufacture weight of the truck.

Thus I have no way of knowing what was the real weight of our stuff. When I ask them to get the stuff back to my home, they are charging me $970 for returning our stuff! Finally after they promised me that they will reweigh the stuff at the destination location, I agreed to let them move the stuff into the storage. However, they charged $400 for driving the truck back to my home to negotiate with me.

The troubles begin again when now we want our stuff to be shipped from the storage into our new home. First we had a difficult time to negotiate with the driver to weight the truck before he came to our house to unload the stuff. When we finally achieved that with your help, they let us wait for three hours, ready for the move and then told us that they will not be coming until the next day. When he arrive two hours later then the scheduled time the next day, he said that our complexs road might be too narrow for his truck to come in, asked my husband to rent a large size truck immediately and come back in two hours.

And he is charging for another $400 dollars for this. At this point of time, the new cost that he is giving us is already $6536. When my husband rent the truck and returned in 1 hour, he found that they disappeared. And after he called them and asked them to come back, he insist on receiving the fully payment first before he unload.

Since the real weight of our stuff can only be obtained after the unload, without knowing what is the real weight of stuff, we asked him to show us something in writing that we will be refund with the extra charge if the new weigh result is less than the previous weight of 8680 lbs.

However, he refused to show us any document to show that we will be refunded is we are overcharged. After we obtained verbal promise from Gary of the dispatch Department of Giant Vanlines, we gave him the money orders that we obtained from the bank. He insisted on only accepting Postal money orders.

My husband offered buying the Postal money orders immediately and return in 10 minutes. But he said that he need to take care of another job and couldnt wait, our stuff will be put into storage until further notice from him, and then he left.

I think that you can understand how we feel at right now. We feel being threaten by people who took hold our live hood and demanding more and more money to get our stuff back. For every small step in the moving process, the cost keeps jumping. I hope that you can help us to finish this move, and end this dreadful nightmare. Here are the things that we will need:

1. A firm total cost from Giant Vanlines company. No more extra charges.

2. A written agreement that if the final weight is less than the weight that we are charged for (8680 lbs), we will get a refund from Giant Vanlines, based on the $0.64/lb rate.

Coordinate with the driver to use a smaller truck to complete the move.

3. The truck will have to be weighed before and after the unload process.
