My girlfriend (fiancee now, no thanks to Gordons) picked out the engagement ring that she absolutely loved. The only place we saw it was in Gordon's Jewelers, and so I went in to order the ring on October 29th. My fiancee has tiny hands, so they had to special order the ring in a size 4. They couldn't just take their generic size 8 and size it down, because they said that would ruin the settings on the band and make the diamonds loose.
Because it was coming up on Christmas, they said it would take 4-6 weeks, possibly longer, but that that I should give them a call in early December and they could tell me the status. As December approached I got more and more excited about proposing on Christmas Eve in front of a warm fire in our condo.
When I called Gordon's on December 12th to check on the status of my ring, they said that they had to look it up on the computer and they would call me right back. I was on my lunch break at work, so I said okay. When I hadn't heard back by lunch the next day, I called back and was advised that the order had been placed incorrectly back in October, and they would have to start ALL OVER. They told me that they would put in a "special rush order" so that they might possibly get the ring in by Christmas.
A week later I was informed (again, after calling twice) that their vendor was out of stock for that particular ring, and it would be approximately another 4-6 weeks. At this point, I wanted desperately to drop the order and find another store to order with, but no other store carried this ring (yes, I checked) and I couldn't afford to have it custom made. So, I had to wait AGAIN.
I started to plan out a few ideas for proposing on Valentine's Day, and started getting excited all over again. However, when I called to check status at the end of January, I was advised that the second order had ALSO BEEN ORDERED INCORRECTLY! Apparently, the store reps had not been receiving confirmation from their vendor that the order was received, and they also weren't following up on it.
So now it was 3 full months after my original order, and I was starting all over again. Out the window went my plans for Valentine's Day. They offered to give me the size 8 out of their showcase just so that my girlfriend had something to wear, but I wasn't about to have her walking around wearing a ring twice as big as it was supposed to be, especially when everyone would want to see it.
At this point, my excitement ran dry. I didn't even call to follow up anymore. I just figured that IF it ever got done they would call me. Well, it finally got done. March 6th. I went in to pick it up, and talked to the manager. For all my trouble I was promised "a nice discount" on the next thing I bought from them, or a "discounted rate" on wedding bands if I buy them there. When I asked for that in writing, she told me that she would remember.
The ring WAS beautiful, and I proposed on March 13th. No specific importance to that date - surprised my girlfriend completely. We're getting married in June.
Good news aside, one month after proposing, my fiancee looked down at her ring and saw that a small diamond from the side of the band was missing. After spending 4 and a half months getting the ring sized so the diamonds wouldn't fall out, and having the ring inspected at the store 2 weeks after she got it, we took it back to Gordon's and they sent it away for... You guessed it... 4-6 weeks. That was last weekend. I would recommend to ANYONE to avoid Gordon's Jewelers like the plague.
