We hired Special Moving Company on Sunday, March 23 for a long distance move from Massachusetts to North Carolina commencing on Monday morning, March 24 after our hired mover cancelled last minute. We were contacted by an employee named Sam who took a complete inventory of the items we were moving over the phone, and wrote up a contract stating they would complete the move, including packing and unpacking of 15 boxes and disassembly and reassembly of all of our furniture for a price of $1856. Upon receiving a contract he emailed to us with very few of the items in our inventory listed, we brought this up to Sam and he stated that the items were "small things" and they don't include those in their inventory, but that we would not be charged extra for all of these "small things". We clarified that we had already packed 12-15 boxes and would need another 15 large boxes packed, and he stated that was fine and even if we required 17 or 20 boxes there would be no additional charges. We further clarified that all of our furniture was brand new and in original boxes, and stated that rather than have it assembled on delivery (for free) so Special Moving would have to disassemble and reassemble upon our arrival in NC, we would just like to leave it in its original packaging and have it assembled upon delivery to NC. We were told this was not a problem and it was all included in the $1856 "sit back and relax" guaranteed price quote.
Upon getting all of our belongings loaded into their moving truck on the 24th, we were told the cost for the move would be in excess of $4000 as they were charging us by the cubic foot, though there was no mention of this before or in the contract we were sent. I called and spoke with an Edgar at Special Moving, and after a lengthy argument lasting about two hours, I agreed to pay $3000 for all of our belonging delivered safely, items unpacked, and furniture assembled, rather than pay them $1856 to unload our items from their truck on the spot and not move anything, which is the only solution he offered. Furthermore, the three movers handling our items left several items behind, left our place a mess and had the nerve to start demanding tips as my wife and I cleaned up their mess they were supposed to take care of as described in their "sit back and relax" package.
Upon delivery in NC on Friday, March 28, we were told by the movers that they would not assemble the furniture, and would not unpack any boxes (even those we had paid for them to pack and unpack). I called and spoke with Edgar again, and he was unwilling to refund us any portion of the $3000 we paid or direct his movers to complete their contracted duties. After unpacking our boxes, we further noted that several items we had moved had been stolen, including a Nintendo Wii console with a brand new game inside, $75 worth of unopened liquor, a microwave, and a shoe carousel (value of these items are approximately $530 to replace).
It should be noted, we had price quotes from other movers to complete the move we wanted at or around the same original "guaranteed" price that Special Moving quoted us. We went with Special Moving because of their claim that their price was "GUARANTEED", but this meant nothing in the long run as they did nothing to own up to their guarantee.
