Last year we were called by Jeff Halsey whom stated that he would cold call and setup good lead appointments for our company. After a half hour of talking to him and getting references, I proceeded to call his references to verify his story. All his references checked out. We then called him too make sure he could indeed set up appointments - the leads that we actually needed. After many minutes of convincing us that he could do the job we sent him a $1000 check for 20 leads ($50 a lead which was high but out of morbid curiosity we proceeded).
Right off the bat he would call us about his computer problems and found that he was fairly computer illiterate and we had to remotely access his PC multiple times to fix issues. We didn't charge him although the service was worth over $200, we just wanted him to proceed. Weeks later he had set up three appointments. None where near the specs that we had given him. We still went to these appointments anyway.
For about a couple of weeks we hadn't hear anything from him. After calling multiple times, he had told us that he as "busy" that he needed a phone system. I had called one of our providers to get him a discounted VoIP phone which he had bought. He had complained about the list that it was hard to read. I was surprised he couldn't read an Excel Document, and redid the document.
He then told us that he was going to another country to do some Missionary work. When I had confronted him on this he told us - "Well it is not my problem - your just going to have to deal with it."
After repeatably calling him over in Europe, I had found out that he had been drinking on and off for a month and he had mentioned that he was always drunk.
Upon returning after a month or so, I again confronted him and got the same result with a hostile - it isn't my problem remark. He had mentioned that he was getting help from other companies and the "the lord was forgiving" of him..
After multiple times of calling him - almost 8 months from the time he had collect our $1000 - we gave up.
Jeff Halsey has a drinking problem that has interfered with his work. He is a habitual lair and has stole $1000 with no intention to payback nor deliver the services he had promised. Because it is a business matter we would have to take it to court - because it would cost us more than what we paid him - it isn't worth our time nor money. I have personally put in over 20 hours total dealing with Mr. Halsey which has lost my company much money and time.
Be warned, just because someone sounds like they can do a job, tells you what you want to hear, might even have good references - never pay the money up front - maybe half, but not all until they can deliver what they say they can.
